What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are smaller. Spider veins appear on the surface of the skin. They can appear as short, fine lines, starburst type clusters and can be found on the thighs, ankles and feet. Occasionally, they are found on the face. They may, however, be a symptom of venous insufficiency, a more serious health problem.

Causes of spider veins include genetics, pregnancy, prolonged standing and sitting, venous insufficiency, injury and high pressure from varicose veins. Spider veins are often a cosmetic concern and may not pose a significant health threat.
