VNUS Closure (Radiofrequency Ablation)

The VNUS Closure Procedure is an incredibly effective, relatively new solution to leg pain and varicose veins. For those suffering from superficial venous reflux disease, it's been a God send. Traditionally, those diagnosed would have to undergo painful varicose vein stripping surgery. The minimally invasive VNUS Closure procedure is the new standard for these patients.

During the procedure, a "closure" catheter is positioned in the vein.  The catheter is then activated allowing the catheter to touch the wall of the vein from inside. Next, radiofrequency energy is transmitted from the VNUS Closure generator through the catheter tip, heating the vein wall and causing contraction of the vein wall resulting in closing down of the vein.

The VNUS Closure procedure has little or no discomfort associated with it. With over 95% of veins being permanently closed, this procedure has a high degree of success. The Closure procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our office.

A Four Step Procedure

  • Mapping the Veins - ultrasound imaging of the varicose veins to trace its location.
  • Inserting the Closure Catheter - the Closure catheter is inserted into the vein and advanced to the uppermost segment of the vein. The physician then numbs the leg with local anesthetic.
  • Delivering RF Energy and Withdraw Catheter - Noninvasive ultrasound is used to confirm the catheter tip position and the physician then activates the RF generator, causing the tip of the catheter to heat the vein wall. As the vein wall is heated, the vein shrinks and the catheter is gradually withdrawn.
  • Confirming Closing of Vein - After treatment, ultrasound imaging is used to confirm closing of the vein.

At Horizon Vascular Specialists, we are pleased to offer the VNUS Closure procedure for superficial venous reflux disease. If you are suffering from the effects of varicose veins, this revolutionary treatment may help you.
